Asda and meat brands to help customers donate thousands of meals to FareShare

The nationwide campaign is focused on meat because it is “always in high demand in the frontline charities FareShare supplies”. Tagged with: buy one give one corporate fundraising donated services Lindsay Boswell, Chief Executive of FareShare, said: “Cooks and chefs at the charities we support often tell us how valuable meat is for the meals they make – not just for its nutritional value but also because of the savings charities make by not having to buy it in the shops.”Customers are still encouraged to donate other long-life store cupboard products at permanent food bank collection points in Asda’s stores. These donations will go to local foodbanks.Stephi Brett-Lee, Asda’s Senior Director for Community said; “Our customers are already incredibly generous in the amount they donate through our in-store food bank donation points, but we wanted to look at ways we can make the donation process easier and increase the volumes donated. By working together with Richmond Sausages, Rustlers Burgers, ABP and FareShare, we can get even more food to those in need in our communities.”The promotion is now running in-store and online and runs for six weeks in 405 stores.“Less risk of fuel poverty”St Francis Pop Up Shop, a community food shop in Chantry in Ipswich, is among the charities receiving Warburtons products through the original trial. Reverend Robert Hinsley, who oversees the project, said: “Chantry is one of the most deprived parts of Ipswich with high levels of poverty. Providing access to surplus food at a very low cost gives our customers the opportunity to choose food items and removes the stigma of using food banks.“Providing food such as Warburtons bread can make a real difference – it can mean a family or individual can have a meal where they would otherwise be unable to do so, and can put them less at risk of fuel poverty as they can afford to heat their home or wash their clothes. Advertisement Food redistribution charity FareShare is likely to receive over one million donated food products through a ‘You Buy One We Give One’ campaign by Asda in partnership with Richmond Sausages, Rustlers Burgers and ABP, one of Asda’s own label meat suppliers. When Asda customers purchase participating Richmond Sausages, the Rustlers All Day Breakfast Sausage Muffin and Asda’s Extra Special Italian Meatballs, another similar product will be donated on their behalf to Fareshare.FareShare will redistribute the food to charities and community groups including food banks, homeless shelters and school breakfast clubs. The charity works with 11,000 charities and community groups which turn the food into hot, nutritious meals for vulnerable people who might not otherwise eat.4.7 million people in the UK live in severely food insecure homes. This means that their food intake is greatly reduced and children regularly experience physical sensations of hunger. Trade War Only Getting Worse for Soy Farmers Fearful for their…

first_img By Hoosier Ag Today – May 7, 2019 Facebook Twitter In what could easily be described as “worst case” for America’s soybean growers, the Trump Administration has confirmed what the industry has feared for months: Heavier tariffs on Chinese goods are planned for Friday, May 10.“This is a predicament for soy growers,” said Davie Stephens, a grower from Clinton, Ky., and president of the American Soybean Association (ASA). “We understand that Mr. Trump and his Administration have broad goals they want to achieve for our country, but farmers are in a desperate situation. We need a positive resolution of this ongoing tariff dispute, not further escalation of tensions.”U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said Monday he plans to move forward with President Trump’s threat on Sunday to increase the tariff rate from 10 to 25 percent on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods, citing China’s back-pedaling on prior commitments during talks in Beijing last week.China’s retaliation against U.S. soy farmers has chilled exports to the U.S.’s most important foreign customer. China has purchased only 5 million metric tons (MMT) of its 20 MMT ‘good faith’ promise, and the original March 1 deadline for concluding negotiations has come and gone. The market has fluctuated with each development during the negotiations, including Trump’s social media posts over the weekend.“After so many threats and missed deadlines for concluding negotiations, this ongoing uncertainty is unacceptable to U.S. farmers,” Stephens continued. “With depressed prices and unsold stocks forecast to double before the 2019 harvest begins in September, we need the China market reopened to U.S. soybean exports within weeks, not months or longer.”ASA urges the Administration to hold off on additional tariffs and rapidly conclude negotiations with China, including lifting the existing Section 301 tariffs in exchange for China removing its retaliatory 25 percent tariff on U.S. soybeans.Stephens concluded, “Soybean farmers have demonstrated great patience as the Administration has sought to negotiate a better trading relationship with China. However, our patience is wearing thin as prices remain low and the tariff dispute drags on. The financial and emotional toll on U.S. soybean farmers cannot be ignored.”Growers have been reeling for almost a year now, after the President first imposed a 25 percent duty on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods in July 2018, and later, a 10 percent duty on an additional $200 billion worth of Chinese products, which resulted in the retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods. That 10 percent duty was scheduled to jump to 25 percent the end of last year, but President Trump delayed the hike after a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in December, with the countries agreeing to hold off for 90 days, and then indefinitely during the ongoing negotiations until this week.Source: American Soybean Association Facebook Twitter Trade War Only Getting Worse for Soy Farmers Fearful for their Future Previous articleHoosier Ag Today Seeking Ag Sales ProfessionalNext articleWheels Not Turning in Southwest Indiana Fields Hoosier Ag Today Home Indiana Agriculture News Trade War Only Getting Worse for Soy Farmers Fearful for their Future SHARE SHARElast_img read more

Armed attack on Tamil newspaper’s distribution office in Kilinochchi

first_img Sri LankaAsia – Pacific Sri Lanka: tamil reporter held on absurd terrorism charge to go further News News Reacting to April 3 armed attack on the Tamil newspaper Uthayan in the northern city of Kilinochchi, Reporters Without Borders and its partner organization, Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka (JDS), call on the authorities to do whatever is necessary to prevent journalists from being harassed and physically attacked. Two employees were seriously injured when six masked men armed with cricket stumps staged a pre-dawn attack on Uthayan’s distribution office, damaging equipment and vehicles.“This invasion of Uthayan’s premises, the use of violence against two employees and the destruction of equipment the newspaper needs for its operations are quite simply unacceptable,” the two organizations said. “Even if the authorities order an investigation, it is unlikely to lead to a conviction and this disgraceful crime will almost certainly go unpunished. After the censorship of the BBC’s Tamil-language broadcasts, this attack constitutes a further blow to the Tamil people’s right to information.”The two organizations added: “The priority for Uthayan now is to resume publishing as soon as possible so that the Tamil community can again benefit from independently reported news and information.”The six intruders took advantage of the arrival of a distribution truck to enter Uthayan’s distribution centre and carry out the attack. The two employees who were injured were taken to Kilinochchni Hospital.A Tamil-language opposition daily that supports the Tamil National Alliance, Uthayan has been the target of attacks in the past, especially in 2011, when its news editor , Gnanasundaram Kuhanathan, and one of its reporters, S. Kavitharan, were the victims of violence. The motive for the attack is not yet known but Uthayan’s staff think it was prompted by a series of articles about army involvement in the seizure of land from Tamils. The newspaper had received several indirect warnings and Tamil media reported last week that military intelligence officers had been seeking information about the newspaper. An Uthayan distributor was attacked on 10 January and the newspapers he was carrying were burned. The newspaper’s editor Premananth Thevanayagam, was summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department on 18 January for questioning about an article implicating senior army officers.Read OnlineUthayan article Help by sharing this information Sri Lanka: RSF signs joint statement on attacks against human rights defenders, lawyers and journalists Receive email alerts April 5, 2013 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Armed attack on Tamil newspaper’s distribution office in Kilinochchi RSF_en center_img Sri Lanka: Journalist manhandled by notorious police inspector currently on trial News News January 13, 2021 Find out more July 29, 2020 Find out more Follow the news on Sri Lanka Organisation Sri LankaAsia – Pacific July 15, 2020 Find out morelast_img read more

Four journalists held for more than 10 days, facing prison terms

first_img NSO Group hasn’t kept its promises on human rights, RSF and other NGOs say News News Follow the news on Morocco / Western Sahara RSF joins Middle East and North Africa coalition to combat digital surveillance Reporters Without Borders today urged the authorities to explain why they are holding four journalists who were originally detained under an anti-terrorism law but are now reportedly going to be prosecuted under the press law and face prison terms.Three of the journalists are to appear before an investigating judge in Rabat tomorrow. They are Mustapha Kechnini, publisher of the Oujda-based weekly Al Hayat al Maghribia, Mohammed el Hourd, publisher of the Oujda-based weekly Asharq, and Abdelmajid Ben Tahar, Asharq’s editor. The fourth journalist, Mustapha Alaoui, managing editor of the weekly Al Ousboue, appeared before a judge yesterday.”We call on justice minister Mohamed Bouzoubaâ to clarify the charges these journalists face, and we would like to know exactly what they are supposed to have done,” Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Robert Ménard said. “If the fight against terrorism is to be a legitimate one, it must not violate freedoms and the freedom of expression in particular,” Ménard added, calling for the immediate release of the journalists. The organisation pointed out that the UN special rapporteur on the right to freedom of opinion and expression, Abid Hussain, called on all governments in January 2000 “to ensure that press crimes are no longer subject to prison sentences except for crimes such as racist or discriminatory comments or appeals for violence.” The imposition of a prison sentence for the peaceful expression of opinion “constitutes a serious violation of human rights,” Hussain said.At the first hearing in Alaoui’s trial yesterday, the judge denied a request for his provisional release, although the 67-year-old editor had to be rushed to Avicenne hospital in Rabat two days after his arrest on 5 June with a diabetic attack. He was detained for publishing a letter from a hitherto unknown group claiming responsibility for three of the five bombings in Casablanca on 16 May. The prosecutor’s office said this was “a flagrant violation of criminal law provisions, especially those in the law on the struggle against terrorism.”Kechnini, Hourd and Ben Tahar were detained on 13 June on the orders of the state prosecutor and are currently being held in Salé prison in Rabat. Kechnini was arrested because the 5 May issue of his newspaper (No. 118) contained an article by an Islamist, Zakkaria Boughara, praising the “jihad movement” in Morocco. Hourd and Ben Tahar were detained over the same article, which they published in their newspaper on 5 June. The Rabat appeal court prosecutor originally said that Kechnini, Hourd and Ben Tahar – as well as the article’s author Boughara – were among those detained in the investigation into the 16 May bombings. However, it appears that they are now being prosecuted under articles 38 and 39 of the press law, which provides for prison sentences of between one and three years. The report also contained a copy of a statement rendered by Pallabi on September 16, 2020 before the Judicial Magistrate, Tehatta under Section 164 CrPC which indicated that she had a relationship with Asmaul and was willingly living with Asmaul. To this, the petitioner (Pallabi Sarkar’s father) claimed that he visited the court of the Judicial Magistrate on the day that his daughter’s statement was recorded under Section 164 CrPC, and asserted that he was not allowed to meet his daughter or talk to her.Significantly, the petitioner claimed that that her daughter had made a statement against her wishes. In response to his allegations, Court ordered that Pallabi be brought before the senior-most Additional District Judge stationed in Tehatta and the petitioner would also be present before the Judge. The Court also ordered that the petitioner and his daughter be allowed to interact in the presence of the concerned Additional District Judge and to ensure that there is no pressure which is brought to bear on Pallabi at the time of such interaction.Pursuant to this, a “clear and clean report” was furnished by the Additional District Judge related to the interaction of the petitioner with his daughter; still, the father (petitioner) harboured some suspicion.Consequently, to allay the father’s suspicion, the Court has, on Monday ordered that Pallabi Sarkar (now known as Ayesha Khatun), would meet Mr. Saibal Bapuli, Additional Public Prosecutor, in Mr. Bapuli’s chamber in Calcutta on December 23, 2020 at 10.30 am. The Court also ordered that at the time that Pallabi meets Mr. Bapuli, there should be no one else in the room, including Pallabi’s husband. Further, Mr. Bapuli has been directed to file a short report when the matter appears next on December 24, 2020.Related NewsThe statement by the Calcutta High Court assumes relevance in the backdrop of recent cases wherein converting one’s religion or marrying someone from another religion has sparked controversy and there are numerous examples to this effect. In a controversial ruling, which was later on declared as bad in law, the Allahabad High Court had, on 23rd September 2020, dismissed a writ petition seeking police protection filed by a married couple. This was after the Court had noted that the girl was a Muslim by birth and she had converted her religion to Hinduism, just a month before the marriage was solemnized.Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi had referred to a 2014 judgment in Noor Jahan Begum @ Anjali Mishra & Anr. v. State of U.P. & Ors., in which it was observed that conversion just for the purpose of marriage is unacceptable.Overruling this Judgment and declaring it bad in law, the Allahabad High Court has, on 11th November, specifically observed that “Right to live with a person of his/her choice irrespective of religion professed by them, is intrinsic to right to life and personal liberty.”Importantly, the Bench of Justice Pankaj Naqvi and Justice Vivek Agarwal remarked,”We fail to understand that if the law permits two persons even of the same sex to live together peacefully then neither any individual nor a family nor even the state can have an objection to the relationship of two major individuals who out of their own free will are living together.””We hold the judgments in Noor Jahan and Priyanshi as not laying good law,” the Court further ruled.Uttar Pradesh Government Brings in Anti-Conversion Law17 days after the Allahabad High Court gave its path-breaking Judgment related to one’s freedom to choose his/her life partner, the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Anandiben Patel promulgated the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance 2020 (Uttar Pradesh Vidhi Viruddh Dharm Samparivartan Pratishedh Adhyadesh 2020).The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Tuesday (24th November) gave its nod to the draft ordinance which makes unlawful religious conversion a non-bailable and cognizable offence [Section 7].The preamble to the Act Reads – “To provide for prohibition of unlawful conversion from one religion to another by misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement or by any fraudulent means or by marriage and for the matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.”Thereafter, Two PILs were filed in the Allahabad High Court against the controversial ordinance law passed by the UP Government in November this year, to prohibit religious conversions in the name of ‘love jihad’.Earlier, a petition was filed by Advocate Saurabh Kumar, challenging the constitutional validity of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020.The Allahabad High Court on Friday (18th December) issued notices on a batch of PILs challenging the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020- promulgated by the UP Governor in November this year, to prohibit religious conversions in the name of ‘love jihad’.Rulings by other CourtsIn the celebrated Judgment of Shakti Vahini v. UOI & others, the Supreme Court of India in the year 2018 held that “when two adults marry out of their volition, they choose their path; they consummate their relationship; they feel that it is their goal and they have the right to do so.””Any kind of torture or torment or ill-treatment in the name of honour that tantamount to atrophy of choice of an individual relating to love and marriage by any assembly, whatsoever nomenclature it assumes, is illegal and cannot be allowed a moment of existence”, the Court further said.Further, in November 2020, the Karnataka High Court held that the right of any major individual to marry the person of his/her choice is a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution of India.A division bench of Justices S Sujata and Sachin Shankar Magadum, while disposing of a habeas corpus petition filed by one Wajeed Khan seeking the release of his lover Ramya from confinement, said:”It is well settled that a right of any major individual to marry the person of his/her choice is a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution of India and the said liberty relating to the personal relationships of two individuals cannot be encroached by anybody irrespective of caste or religion.”Case title – Palash Sarkar Vs.
