first_img 11 4. Angelo Ogbonna (centre back) – Smalling’s partner could be Ogbonna. According to The Times, the West Ham man is at the top of United’s defensive wish list and they are prepared to battle Manchester City for his signature. 11 11 11 1. David De Gea (goalkeeper) – click the arrow above to see the full possible Manchester United line up for next season – Having tied him down to a long-term deal after his move to Real Madrid collapsed in the summer, only a record offer for De Gea would tempt United into selling. Expect the Spaniard to remain in between the posts next season. 8. Bastian Schweinsteiger (midfield) – Schweinsteiger’s arrival in the Premier League has been somewhat disappointing, with the German not having the impact expected. Despite this, though, such experience is crucial for the club moving forward. 11 10. Anthony Martial (striker) – Martial’s talent is wasted on the wing. He looks to have lost a little confidence of late, but he must start as a centre forward – where he is at his most dangerous. 11 11. Gonzalo Higuain (striker) – It’s a rarity in the modern game, but United could deploy two up top. There have been few more prolific than Higuain this season, and the Red Devils are reportedly interested in the £62m-rated striker. Finding the back of the net has been difficult for the club this season, suggesting a serious change is needed in attack. 11 6. Ander Herrera (midfield) – The Spaniard has been used sparingly under Van Gaal, much to the frustration of the Old Trafford faithful. He’s one of United’s most creative players and should be cherished. 11 11 11 2. Matteo Darmian (right back) – Darmian hasn’t quite lived up to potential at Old Trafford, with injury largely halting his progression in his debut Premier League campaign. Nonetheless, confidence is high that he is the man to fill the role at right back for the foreseeable future. 3. Chris Smalling (centre back) – The England international has been the Red Devils’ standout performer this term, earning the respect of manager Van Gaal – which is no easy task. The problem has been finding Smalling a regular partner in defence. 9. Wayne Rooney (attacking midfield) – The Three Lions captain was written off at the beginning of the season, but has hit back, reminding supporters of his match-winning influence. He’s out of action for the next few weeks with injury, and it’ll be interesting to see his impact, particularly at the 2016 European Championship, upon his return. Manchester United still appear some way off the finished article. The Red Devils have struggled to keep pace with the Premier League’s top four, despite a promising start, having drifted outside of the Champions League spots in recent weeks. While back-to-back victories over Arsenal and Watford have drawn them level with fourth-placed Manchester City, this season has been riddled with disappointing performances. With this in mind, it’s expected that United will address their senior squad in the summer. So, we’ve taken a look at a possible line up for Manchester United next season, featuring a new forward that has 25 goals to his name so far this term – check it out by clicking the yellow arrow above, right. 11 5. Luke Shaw (left back) – It’s disappointing that injury has put the former Southampton defender’s progression back a season, but he could return even stronger. Marcos Rojo doesn’t look convincing and Shaw is firmly considered the long term prospect in this position. 7. Morgan Schneiderlin (midfield) – The Frenchman has been consistent without lighting up the Theatre of Dreams. He might not grab the headlines, but Schneiderlin has been key to United’s stubborn defence this season. last_img read more
