The Long Beach State men’s and women’s basketball teams will open practice for the 2005-06 season Friday night in the Gold Mine, with the public invited to watch. The women will practice from 7 to 9 p.m., with the men following and wrapping up at approximately 11 p.m. The men will hold a 3-point, shoot-a-thon at about 10 p.m., with proceeds going to the Red Cross. Admission for both practice sessions if free. Coach Larry Reynolds is beginning his fourth season as the men’s coach and returns numerous key players from last season, including seniors in guard Jibril Hodges and forward Shawn Hawkins. And Mary Hegarty is in her third season as the school’s women’s coach, with three starters (Jayme Connors, Crystal McCutcheon and Jeannie Saunders) returning from a team that won 19 games last season. LBSU coach to conduct ‘Hoop School’ Long Beach State women’s basketball assistant coach Nicole Anderson, a former standout at UCLA, will conduct her “Hoop School” for middle school (grades 6-8) girls on Oct. 22 in the Rogers Middle School gymnasium in Long Beach. Players will be instructed in basketball fundamentals and drills.
