Yankees Lose Cano to Mariners

first_imgNew York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano has agreed to terms with the Seattle Mariners on a 10-year deal worth at least $240 million, according to multiple reports.Cano’s representatives wouldn’t comment on the reports, which said that Cano elected to join the Mariners after a quick courtship that saw he and agent Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter fly to Seattle, with promises of a nine-year deal worth $225 million, only to have Cano’s camp seek a 10th year upon arrival. That was worked out the morning of Dec. 6, and the five-time All Star agreed to join Seattle, as ESPN’s Enrique Rojas first reported, and reiterated by The Wall Street Journal. The Mariners issued a non-denial denial of the signing on their Twitter account after being bombarded with media requests.“We aren’t able to confirm any news regarding Robinson Cano at this time. If & when an agreement is completed & finalized, we will announce,” said the message on the Mariners’ official account. The Yankees had insisted all along that they wanted Cano, but that they were never willing to go to the range of 10 years to get him and after New York signed Jacoby Ellsbury from the Boston Red Sox it seemed they were less interested in their star infielder.Burned by the length of the 10-year Alex Rodriguez contract, among others, the Yankees had offered a seven-year deal worth roughly $170 million in the hope that no team would blow them away with an offer much longer than that. The gambit failed, the Journal reported. For the first time in the history of free agency, the Yankees were outbid on a homegrown star in his prime, who they wanted to keep on a deal of five years or more, by a mid-market team. Jose Arnaiz scored a superb debut goal as Barcelona cruised to a 3-0 first-leg win over Murcia in the last 32 of the Copa del Rey.The 22-year-old, drafted into the side after impressing for Gerard Lopez’s B team, fired home the goal of the game after Paco Alcacer and Gerard Deulofeu had put the holders in control at the Nueva Condomina.Ernesto Valverde named Arnaiz, Carles Alena and Thomas Vermaelen – making his first start of the season – in a much-changed line-up, as Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Luis Suarez, Paulinho and Marc-Andre ter Stegen were all left out. A Liverpool legend in the making: Behind Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable rise to world’s best player Murcia performed well for much of the first half, looking a threat on the break, but Alcacer’s well-taken header saw Barca take control just before half-time.Deulofeu added a second shortly after the break before Arnaiz netted the third to put the LaLiga leaders in command of the tie ahead of the return leg at Camp Nou on November 29.The Catalans now turn their attention to a league trip to Valverde’s old club Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, for which Arnaiz could well be in contention following an excellent display.8 – José Arnaiz has been involved in 8 goals (five goals & three assists) in nine games played for @FCBarcelona (Segunda & Copa). Having shown excellent movement to elude his marker, the former Valencia man met Deulofeu’s cross and steered a header past the static Alejandro Santome.Barca’s lead was doubled less than seven minutes after the restart thanks to the lively Deulofeu, who won back possession outside the Murcia half, drove into the box and slotted a good finish beneath Santome from a tight angle.1 – For the first time Gerard Deulofeu has scored & assisted both in a single game on the Spanish Top Flight (all competitions).
