Huge Chelsea blow! Mourinho confirms major Courtois injury

first_img1 Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will undergo knee surgery which will keep him out for ‘quite a long time’, Jose Mourinho has confirmed. The Belgian international injured his right knee in training on Thursday and is now set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines. The news is a big blow for the champions after the 23-year-old played such a vital role during their 2014-15 title-winning campaign.Mourinho will now have to rely on summer recruit Asmir Begovic, who joined from Stoke City to replace Petr Cech as the club’s No. 2. Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Mourinho said: “Courtois was injured in a training session with the goalkeepers and I cannot tell you much, but I can tell you that he needs surgery in his right knee. “As a consequence of that he will be out for quite a long time. I cannot be at this moment more specific about the injury or the time he will be out.” The Portuguese manager also revealed that Oscar will miss Saturday’s trip to Everton but could return in time for their Champions League opener at home to Maccabi Tel-Aviv next Wednesday.
