(June 27, 2015)–With heavily favored Curlin’s Fox a non-factor turning for home, longshot Prize Exhibit, ridden by Santiago Gonzalez, rallied from dead last around the far turn to take Saturday’s Grade III, $100,000 Senorita Stakes at Santa Anita. Trained by James Cassidy, English-bred Prize Exhibit covered one mile on turf in 1:36.03.Off at 9-1 in a field of nine 3-year-old fillies, Prize Exhibit paid $21.80, $9.00 and $6.20. Owned by DP Racing, Prize Exhibit, who was Group placed in England last October, got her second stateside win from five starts here and improved her overall mark to 14-4-1-1. With the winner’s share of $60,000, she increased her earnings to $212,050.Long Hot Summer, who was ridden by Joe Talamo, showed the way through fractions of 22.99, 47.29, 1:11.74 and 1:23.90 and finished second, one length in front of Lutine Belle. Off at 7-1, Long Hot Summer paid $6.80 and $5.00.Lutine Belle made a steady late run from far back under Rafael Bejarano to finish third, a half length clear of Rattataptap. (Nov. 5, 2016) – Mike Smith, who won three races and finished second in three others won the 14th Bill Shoemaker Award, given to the most outstanding jockey of the 2016 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park. The Shoemaker Award is based on a 10-5-3-1 scoring system on first- through fourth-place finishes in each of the 13 Breeders’ Cup World Championship races. Smith also finished second in Friday’s Longines Distaff on Songbird and in the Juvenile Fillies Turf on Coasted with Saturday’s runner-up finish coming on Masochistic in the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Smith finished third on American Gal in Saturday’s 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Smith, who previously had won the Shoemaker Award at the 2012 and 2013 renewals, won Friday’s Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Tamarkuz, Saturday’s Filly & Mare Sprint on Finest City and capped off the weekend with a victory in the Classic on Arrogate. Smith finished with 48 points to out distance Joel Rosario who had 28 points. Smith was the only rider to win more than one race.
