first_imgThe Government of Liberia says it is expecting two distinguished guests today in the persons of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Rajiv Shah and Foreign Minister of Norway, Børge Brende to assess the Ebola situation in Liberia and other infected countries in the sub-region.According to a US State Department release, Mr. Shah is currently on a 5-day visit to West Africa, specifically Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Senegal from October 13-17, to meet with national and local officials, aid organizations, and staff coordinating the international response to the Ebola outbreak in the sub-region. USAID is helping to coordinate an aggressive U.S. Government response to the Ebola outbreak that leverages broad expertise and personnel from several federal departments and agencies, including the Departments of Defense, Health and Human Services, and State, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Administrator Rajiv Shah began leadership of USAID a few days before the earthquake in Haiti in January 2010. He is generally credited for leading a very successful effort in assisting Haiti recover through a very swift and effective response. It is expected that Administrator Shah will bring the same vision and strategic response to the fight against Ebola. Rajiv Shah previously served as Under Secretary of Research, Education and Economics (REE) and Chief Scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.Norway’s Foreign Minister Brende, for his part, will get a firsthand look and briefing on the outbreak and its effect on the country. He is expected to renew Norway’s commitment to assisting Liberia with Ebola, as well as his country’s partnership beyond Ebola. Minister Brende, who is also Councilor of State, presides over the Ministry which is responsible for trade, foreign aid and cooperation with international organizations, among other things. He belongs to the Conservative Party and previously served in the Norwegian government as Minister of the Environment and as Minister of Trade and Industry.During a high-level Ebola Crisis Event held in connection with the World Bank annual meetings in Washington, D.C. last week, Minister, Børge Brende on Thursday, October 9, pledged well over US$10 million toward a new multi-donor fund for the fight against Ebola set up by the World Bank. “It is positive that the World Bank is setting up a fund to put the health sector in the affected countries in a better position to deal with the crisis.  Norway will contribute NOK 70 million (well over US$10 million) to the fund,” said Minister Børge Brende at the event. Earlier that week, the Norwegian Government doubled its funding for the fight against Ebola, bringing Norway’s contribution up to a total of NOK 184 million. With the addition of this pledge to the new fund, Norway’s support will amount to NOK 254 million (nearly US$40 million).According to Liberia’s Information Minister Lewis Brown, the Government of Liberia intends to engage both officials regarding support to communities in terms of community care centers, increase public awareness, and to seek continued support for rebuilding of the nation’s public health system.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

City Hall’s employees warned not to speak with media

first_img… Mayor refuses to commentIn light of the unearthing of four hidden bank accounts at City Hall, Georgetown Mayor Patricia Chase Greene has opted to remain mum on the matter. City Hall is being accused of shrouding corruption in many areas of the Council and so the recent finding of the four bank accounts – which were reflected in its financial statements at the statutory meetings – is causing much tension among the Councillors.Councillor Bishram Kuppen has stated that at the first statutory meeting, he perused the report and found the discrepancy. He related that when he questioned the City Treasurer on the matter, he confirmed the accounts.“After a number of attempts, the City Treasurer just blurted it out that there were four additional accounts, and each subsequent statutory meeting, I keep pushing for those additional accounts to be included in the reconciliation of the financial statement. All those accounts should be included,” Kuppen allegedly. When Guyana Times approached Mayor Chase Greene on the issue and questioned her on where the accounts were, she laughed and said “they are at a bank”. However, shortly after she redirected the question to her Town Clerk.“You know what? I’m not the person that can talk to you about this. You should speak to mister King,” she said.Nevertheless, all attempts to contact Town Clerk Royston King proved futile. When this publication called his office early on Tuesday morning, he was in a meeting. Three hours later, when his office was contacted again, this newspaper was told that he had “stepped out.” Another two hours later, when the publication called again, his cellular phone was turned off. This newspaper also made efforts to contact the Public Relations Officer and the City Treasurer on the matter; however, the Treasurer’s Secretary informed this publication that the treasurer was unable to pronounce on the issue, adding that all authorities were warned not to speak with the media on the matter.“All questions should be directed to the PRO or the Mayor,” the Secretary stated. It is unknown how much monies are being stored in these accounts and for what purpose.“This perception is fuelled by the lack of accountability for hundreds of millions of dollars spent on projects with no public tendering, improper financial reporting, four hidden bank accounts which are not included in any financial reports to Councillors, and financial deficits being reported on a consistent basis every month,” Kuppen said while addressing the issue of skullduggery within the Council.Of recent there have been calls for an audit to be conducted into the financial affairs of the Mayor and City Council, since there has not been any audit reports submitted for the past 10 years.Former Auditor General Anand Goolsarran had insisted that 10 years of arrears in terms of financial reporting and auditing was not only a “disturbing trend” but also showed that the Council had no interest in bringing the accounts to order. He stated that as of August 2013, the last set of audited accounts of the Council was for 2004 and the Audit Office had received financial statements for the years 2005 and 2007. There is no evidence to suggest that any financial statements were produced for 2006.According to the Municipal and District Councils Act, within four months of the close of the financial year, the City Treasurer is required to prepare and submit to the auditor, financial statements for that year for audit. If the treasurer fails to comply, he/she will be guilty of an offence. It has been over a decade that the M&CC – dominated by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), a main partner in the governing coalition – has failed to make any public presentation of its financial position.last_img read more

Gates urging Japan to meet its obligations

first_imgTOKYO – U.S. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates told pacifist Japan today that it had an obligation to take on an expanded role in global security affairs appropriate to its political, economic and military capabilities. In a final public appearance of a week of travels across East Asia, Gates told students and faculty members of Tokyo’s Sophia University that Americans “hope and expect Japan will choose to accept more global security responsibilities in the years ahead.” Gates recalled that before the first Persian Gulf War in 1991, Japan, which is far more dependent on Middle East oil than is the United States, contributed financial support but no military forces. He also said Japan was criticized for what was then dismissively called “checkbook diplomacy.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. This was a fantastic tournament which is played 7 aside. The level of football played was exceotional by all teams. Our own team competed well against finalists N.Conaill in our first group game with Cody Laverty getting 2 goals and Kieran Neeson exceptional throughout. However the difference was N.Conaill were more accurate in front of the posts and able to take their scores when the chances arrived.Howver Red Hugh’s continued to create goal chances with Gareth McGill and Kieran Neeson unlucky towards the end to capitalise.Red Hugh’s played Urris next who are the reigning NRB champions having win that competition in June. Red Hugh’s boys again continued to play an attacking fast style of football using Kieran Neeson as the main target who was able to use his speed and strength to win ball. Cody Laverty, Luke Browne. Gareth Mc Gill, Paul Doherty , Darragh Mc Menamin and Cian Gallagher were always in support. Oisin McElhinney was a leader from the back and the launch of many of our attacks. Tiaran Kelly also was top class in nets for the 1st game and outfield in the 2nd game. His intelligent quick thinking was always a threat and set up many of our scoring opportunitiesThere could only be one winner and it was Killybegs who beat a good N. Conaill side who unfortunately didn’t get the best start in the final giving up 2 easy goals and were playing catch up throughout the game. They could only manage to get to 3 points of Killybegs who ran out worthy winners throughout. Killybegs go onto to represent Donegal in Ulster Og Sport. In a attacking match Red Hugh’s came out on top with a 1 point victory. Red Hugh’s however bowed out in the Semi – Final. These boys and management should be extremely proud of themselves.Red Hughs Under 10’s will also travel to Moy on Saturday 10th September for a similar tournament.U6 U8 and U10 With our own Summer Camp and Cul Camps finished for the summer.
