30 killed in two separate mass shootings in US

first_imgNew Delhi: Within 24 hours, the United States witnessed two mass shootings, one at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas and another at Dayton, Ohio, killing a total of 30 people and leaving at least 42 injured.Ten people, including the shooter, were killed and at least 16 others injured in the wee hours of Sunday morning in Dayton’s Oregon district, a neighbourhood known for its nightclubs, bars, and art galleries. And hours before, a 21-year-old gunman had opened fire with an assault rifle at a crowded Walmart store in Texas’s El Paso, killing 20 people and wounding 26 others. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c detailsThe authorities identified the El Paso gunman as Patrick Crusius from an affluent Dallas suburb. They added that they were investigating a manifesto Crusius, who is white, may have posted before the shooting, which described an attack in response to “the Hispanic invasion of Texas.” El Paso has long been both a cultural and political symbol of Hispanic Texas. While the Dayton shooter was shot dead during a stand-off with law enforcement authorities, the Walmart gunman was taken into custody by police “without incident” after he surrendered. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from Thursday”The ages and genders of all these people injured and killed are numerous in the age groups,” El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen said. “The situation, needless to say, is a horrific one.” Whereas, Dayton Assistant Chief of Police Lt Col. Matt Carper said that despite the many fatalities, patrolling officers were close by to hear the gunshots at 1 am and bring the situation under control quickly. Officials in Ohio added that the shooter was wearing body armour. However, in the southern border town of El Paso, a packed Walmart store, where shoppers were busy buying back to school stuff for their kids, was filled with gun smoke and the echo of gunfire for several minutes. Footage shot on mobiles appeared to show multiple bodies lying on the ground in the store’s parking lot. “Texas grieves for the people of El Paso,” Texas Governor Greg Abbott told reporters. President Donald Trump condemned the El Paso attack as an “act of cowardice” and said there could be no justification for the killing of innocent people. In a string of mass shootings this year that have killed 522 people and injured over 2,000 others, the Dayton shooting is the 251st mass shooting of 2019. There have been only 216 days in the year so far. Local sources also said that the FBI has initiated a concurrent terrorism investigation in the El Paso shooting. With PTI inputslast_img read more

The streaming wars start Nov 12 when Disney comes to Canada

The Walt Disney Company will launch its streaming entertainment service in Canada on Nov. 12 for $8.99 per month, and it will likely end up being a major force in the entertainment landscape.According to research by the Toronto-based Solutions Research Group (SRG), at the $8.99 price point, 30 per cent of internet-connected households in Canada will consider subscribing to Disney+.“About half of those, we think, would be quick prospects in the first year to 18 months, so about 1.65-1.7 million subscribers,” said Kaan Yigit, president and research director for SRG.“So to put that in context, Netflix now has 6.5 million in the Canadian marketplace. So it’s a quarter of Netflix within a year to 18 months. That’s a lot of households.”At $8.99, the Disney+ service will be substantially cheaper than Netflix’s standard $13.99 plan in Canada, and Disney has a deep library of content to draw on, including the Marvel superhero movies, the Star Wars franchise, all of Disney’s own movies and TV shows, plus The Simpsons. The launch of Disney+ in November is arguably the real beginning of the so-called “streaming wars” as major companies all vie for a share of the streaming entertainment market.Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are already in the market, but in addition to the Disney service, Apple, WarnerMedia, NBCUniversal and a startup called Quibi are all planning to launch their own streaming products. For Disney, Canada and the Netherlands will be among the first countries to receive the streaming service, with Australia and New Zealand being added a week later.“My sense of it is that Canada ends up being a low-risk trial market before you go into maybe less familiar global markets,” Yigit said.“It’s not a high-return market in the sense that it’s not a huge population, but it’s low-risk. They probably looked across the titles that they had and said, ‘y’know, 80 per cent of this is free and clear, so let’s do this.’”Many of the details remain fuzzy.Broadly speaking, each of the big players in video entertainment have two options right now; they can either licence the rights to their content for fees, or they can hold it back as an exclusive item for their own streaming service. For example, NBCUniversal will be taking back The Office from Netflix, so it can be the backbone of a new streaming service. But different countries have different licensing agreements, which is why HBO already operates its own streaming service in the U.S., but in Canada that’s part of the Crave streaming service owned by Bell Media.Because of these factors, it’s not clear what Disney+ will look like in Canada.“We immediately started emailing Disney, and we’re going to find out eventually what it is,” said Brahm Eiley, founder of Convergence Research Group, which follows telecom, internet and technology issues.“In the nitty gritty, it gets really complicated in terms of what’s going to be offered.”For example, the Disney+ website lists five recognizable brand names which will form the backbone of the service at launch: Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and Disney itself. But exactly which Star Wars movies or TV shows are available in Canada could be impacted by a 2017 “multi-year” licencing deal with Corus Entertainment for the Canadian rights to Star Wars properties.Eiley said in the short term, Corus will likely be one of the big losers from Disney’s decision to launch in Canada, and not just because of Star Wars.“Corus, essentially, has been the purveyor of Disney — they run The Disney Network here,” Eiley said. “So the question is, what happens to all that?”As various competing services launch, and the streaming wars really ramp up, one of the likely outcomes is more people shifting away from traditional cable or satellite TV.But on that front, Eiley said this isn’t necessarily bad news for the big telecoms in Canada.“It’s a higher margin business to do the internet anyway. The TV business has been increasingly more challenging,” he said.“They’re effectively charging more for internet access than TV, so they’ve been able to pull a huge rabbit out of their hat.”• Email: jmcleod@nationalpost.com | Twitter: read more

Mitel Talkdesk Next Big Thing in UCaaSCCaaS

And speaking of Clare, his path to Mitel may be worthy of note here. Clare was part of Mitel’s acquisition of its then contact center OEM partner, prairieFyre, in 2013. So, Mitel has a history of buying its contact center OEM. #JustSaying.Tags:News & ViewsMitelTalkdeskcontact centerRingCentralinContactCCaaSAnalyst InsightCloud CommunicationsContact Center & Customer ExperiencePartner EcosystemUCaaSVendor Strategy Articles You Might Like Next, Mitel’s earlier CCaaS partner’s solution was strictly “over-the-top” — i.e., there was no integration with Mitel’s UC or UCaaS offerings. This is where the word “strategic” comes in and why the Mitel/Talkdesk partnership is categorically different than Mitel’s earlier OEM. The two companies have outlined three phases for bringing Talkdesk’s CCaaS to Mitel customers, the last implying not only integration but co-development: McGeeSmith_MitelTalkdesk_2_300.png Talkdesk and Mitel chose the Channel Partners event being held in Las Vegas this week as the launchpad for a new strategic partnership. Via the partnership, Mitel’s new MiCloud Connect CX, powered by Talkdesk, will be available this month on Mitel’s unified communications-as-a-service (UCaaS) platform MiCloud Connect, and also available as an option for Mitel’s extensive base of on-premises unified communications customers. By the end of 2019, MiCloud Connect CX will be available as a tightly coupled, integrated solution with MiCloud Connect CX for UCaaS customers, and as a contact center as a service (CCaaS) migration choice for Mitel’s extensive global installed base of premises-based unified communications customers. businesspartnership_774.png Phase 1: Mitel begins reselling Talkdesk product to their UCaaS customers; UCaaS generally available April 2019.Phase 2: Mitel begins selling CCaaS to UC customers (i.e., premises and single-tenant cloud Flex) in May 2019. In Q3 2019, Talkdesk product gets initial rebranding as Mitel.Phase 3: Talkdesk product gets integrated with the Mitel MiCloud Connect UCaaS platform in December 2019. Mitel and Talkdesk explain that they are in the planning stages to determine what this integration will look like initially and say that it will continue to evolve over time. While the timeline looks aggressive, in fact, Mitel and Talkdesk have already been working together for several months. During a joint briefing with Matthew Clare, director of contact center solutions at Mitel, and Tom Milligan, vice president of strategic partnerships at Talkdesk, both were proud to show the Mitel-branded version of the Talkdesk Callbar application (below). It’s nice to end with one, but I find I have two closing thoughts. There are obvious similarities between the Mitel/Talkdesk partnership and the one struck by RingCentral and inContact in 2015. Four years later, the marriage has been a good one for both, but it’s hard not to recognize the threat of discord with RingCentral’s two contact center acquisitions in the past year. Asked if Mitel will offer Talkdesk’s recently announced WFM solution, Clare’s commitment is strong: “The goal is to offer our customers absolutely everything that Talkdesk has in their toolkit.” See All in CCaaS » McGeeSmith_MitelTalkdesk_1_774.png Enterprise Connect 2019: Voices from the Exhibit Floor Michelle Burrows, Serenova May 07, 2019 To get to the heart of why contact centers are making the move to cloud, we surveyed EC19 attendees. Here’s what we learned. Aspect Has New Owner and Updated CCaaS Plan Sheila McGee-Smith February 14, 2019 Newly installed CEO, Patrick Dennis, is priming the Via platform for greater presence in the enterprise. From a Talkdesk perspective, Milligan said that the two numbers in the graphic here to the right, Mitel’s global cloud users and its large number of selling partners, “encapsulate the extended reach Mitel gives us.” Milligan went on to acknowledge that some continue to label Talkdesk as an SMB player and this partnership adds to the company’s “enterprise street cred.” First, this is no white-label exercise. Not only has Mitel decided to go forward with a different CCaaS partner, but by issuing a joint press release, Mitel is signaling that it believes there is value in linking its brand with Talkdesk’s. It was just eight months ago that I wrote, in Mitel Recalibrates Contact Center Strategy, how the company was doubling down on contact center. In that post, I reported that Mitel had added a white-labeled CCaaS solution to its contact center portfolio. With this week’s announcement, Mitel continues to recalibrate its strategy in several ways. A third, subtler, change in strategy is a commitment by Mitel to a single CCaaS solution for all its customers — from SMB to large enterprise. It’s no coincidence that MiCloud Connect CX borrows most of its name from MiCloud Connect Contact Center, the current SMB CCaaS solution with a ShoreTel heritage in Mitel’s portfolio. As described by Clare, “Mitel will lead with Talkdesk as a CCaaS solution going forward.” Mitel Uses Talkdesk to ‘Youthenize’ its Portfolio Dave Michels April 09, 2019 A clever alliance that benefits both companies is indicative of how CCaaS is changing. Thrio: Third Time, Third Charm Sheila McGee-Smith March 12, 2019 This new venture, from serial entrepreneurs and CCaaS pioneers, aims to set the bar for AI-powered cloud contact centers. As detailed in numerous articles both here on No Jitter and elsewhere, contact center — and specifically CCaaS — were front and center at this year’s Enterprise Connect conference. One of the key themes surrounding CCaaS is the role it will play both as a standalone application and as part of a broader UCaaS/CCaaS play. With this announcement, both Mitel and Talkdesk re-define their approach to this potentially looming opportunity. 8×8 CCaaS: Now a Stand-alone Service Sheila McGee-Smith June 25, 2019 With this move, company signals it will no longer address contact center merely as a UC add-on. Head of UN probe into Lebanese expremiers assassination arrives in Syria

At the same time Secretary-General Kofi Annan informed the Security Council of his intention to grant a 40-day extension to the UN International Independent Investigation Commission (UNIIIC), set up by the Security Council to probe the February bomb attack which killed Mr. Hariri and 20 others.Earlier this month, after naming the heads of Lebanese intelligence and security agencies as suspects, UNIIIC head Detlev Mehlis said he would seek an extension of the inquiry’s three-month mandate to complete its work.Mr. Hariri’s assassination led to renewed calls for the withdrawal of all Syrian troops and intelligence agents, who had been in Lebanon since the early stages of the country’s 1975-1990 civil war. Syria withdrew its troops from its smaller neighbour in April. The extension means the investigators’ mandate will now last until 25 October. read more

Torching of house in occupied West Bank draws UN officials concern

The United Nations official coordinating the peace process toward resolving the longstanding conflict between Israel and Palestine today expressed concern about reports of yet another arson attack targeting a Palestinian family in Duma in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.“If confirmed, this despicable act would be the third incident in this particular village in the last year,” said the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nickolay Mladenov. On 31 July last year, Jewish extremists set fire to the home of a Palestinian family, killing 18-month-old Ali Saad Dawabsha and his parents, and leaving four year-old Ahmed orphaned. “Indictments have been made, but the perpetrators of this terrible crime have yet to face justice,” Mr. Mladenov said.According to media reports, the latest attack is on a relative of the family attacked on 31 July. The third attack refers to an incident in March, in which the house of Ibrahim Mohammed Dawabsha, the only living witness to the 31 July attack, was set alight.Mr. Mladenov called on the authorities to move swiftly in bringing all the perpetrators to justice, including those responsible for the incident last night. He also urged Israel, as the occupying power, to ensure that vulnerable Palestinian communities in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are protected in line with its obligations under international law. read more

A moment of silence to honour the fallen

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram This year marks the centennial of the end of World War I, during which hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives. The memory of the fallen will be honoured this Sunday 11 November across the globe. In Melbourne, people will gather at the Shrine of Remembrance, where a a wreath laying ceremony is to take place at exactly 11am.It is at this time that the light of the sun begins to shine through and display the writing that is carved on the stone that reads “Greater Love Hath No Man”, a special feature of the stone that required over 140 pages of calculations in order to get right.Attending the event will be the Governor of Victoria, Linda Dessau, who will be laying the wreath, along with the Premier Daniel Andrews, the lord mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp, diplomats, politicians, Shrine Trusties and Governors, RSL and Legacy representatives and Defence Service Chiefs. The end of the Great War occurred on 11 November, 1918 as the armies of the Allied Forces were in negotiations with the Germans at Compiegne of France for the entire evening, with an agreement for an armistice finally being reached at 5.00 am.However it took another six hours for word to get out to the troops on the battlefield. And so, with the agreement being passed at 11.00 am Paris time, it came to be known as the “armistice of the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month” and marked the victory for the Allied Forces and the withdrawal of Germany behind the Rhine border. The official emblem of Remembrance Day is the red poppy, as it was the only flower to bloom across the battlefields after the war had ended, as if to not allow anyone to forget about the blood that had been spilt with its bright red colour.last_img read more
